A. Wright Sheffield Farmer’s Pocket Knife Rosewood 70

A. Wright Sheffield Farmer’s Pocket Knife Rosewood 70

Designed as a reliable work knife, the blade of the Farmers’ knife is rough finished, C70 carbon steel with nickel silver bolsters, brass handle liners, polished rosewood handle scales. A. Wright pocket knives have very strong blade springs when new, which makes these pocket knives safer to use as work knives. The blade pivot will gradually wear in with use and gradually become easier to open and close. The farmers’ knife, model 70W is the same length as the Lambfoot knife 31 W. The only difference is a slightly wider blade profile, which can be opened by grasping the blade instead of using the nail nick.

Hand made in Sheffield England, A. Wright pocket knives have C70 carbon steel blades. Carbon steel pocket knives generally hold a better edge than stainless steel knives, but need to be cleaned and oiled after use to prevent corrosion. Surface corrosion can be removed with fine emery cloth.

The Lambfoot style of blade used in the Farmers’ knife has a straight cutting edge with the blade back sloping down at almost 90 degrees to form a rounded or squared off point. Lamb foot blades make ideal work knives with the straight cutting edge allowing for accurate slicing. The blade shape has the added safety of a rounded point and lambfoot blades also make good wood carving knives.

Loewen 1155 Pocket Work Knife

A. Wright Carbon Steel Pocket Knife – Cutting Test

A. Wright pocket knives are hand made in Sheffield, England with a high standard of quality control at each step of the process. The blades of A. wright pocket knives are made of extremely hard steel, as the cutting test demonstrates. With a price point below £25 including VAT and UK delivery, the A. Wright carbon steel folding pocket knives represent excellent value for money.

From new, the knife is sharp enough to make a fairly clean cut through a sheet of 80 GSM white paper. Cutting an aluminium soft drink can in half is easy and does not make the knife blunt. Immediately after cutting through an aluminium drinks can, and without re-sharpening the blade, it is still possible to make a fairly clean cut through a sheet of 80 GSM paper.

The only drawback with a hard blade steel such as this, is the slight difficulty when it comes to re-sharpening the blade. In this case, sharpening the blade is made even harder by the curved shape of the edge. Blades with a straight cutting edge such as the Lambfoot design are much easier to sharpen.

When choosing a work knife, one of the main considerations is the ability to maintain a sharp cutting edge after lengthy use.
